How to Reduce PDF File Size on iPhone and iPad

Use PDF Mate's Compress PDF tool directly in your browser.
Method 1: Use a Browser-Based Compressor (No App Needed)
The easiest option on iPhone is to open Safari and visit pdfmate.io/tools/compress. Tap to upload your PDF from the Files app, choose a compression level, and download the result — all without installing anything. The file stays on your device at all times.
Method 2: Print to PDF With Reduced Quality
Open the PDF in the Files app. Tap the Share icon, then choose Print. On the next screen, pinch outward on the preview thumbnail to create a PDF — tap the Share icon again and save to Files. This re-renders the PDF at screen quality, which is lower than the original and produces a smaller file. A quick, built-in method for simple PDFs.
Method 3: Use the Books App (iPhone Tip)
Open the PDF in Apple Books. Some PDFs render at a reduced resolution in Books which, when shared back out as a PDF, produces a smaller file. This is inconsistent and not reliable for all PDFs, so test it on a copy first.
What Compression Level Should I Choose?
For PDFs you need to email (most email servers cap attachments at 10–25 MB), Standard compression cuts file size by 40–60% while keeping the document legible. If size is critical and readability on screen is all you need, choose Strong compression for the smallest possible output.
Where Does the Compressed PDF Go?
When using the browser-based tool in Safari, the download goes to your Downloads folder in the Files app. From there you can AirDrop it, share via Messages or Mail, or move it to iCloud Drive.
