Try it free — no sign-up needed
Use PDF Mate's Add Page Numbers tool directly in your browser.
When You Need Page Numbers
Legal documents, academic papers, corporate reports, and technical manuals all require page numbers for navigation and citation. If your PDF was created without them, adding them retroactively takes just seconds.
Step-by-Step: Add Page Numbers to a PDF
- Open the Page Numbers tool.
- Upload your PDF.
- Choose position: top-left, top-center, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, or bottom-right.
- Set the starting number (e.g., start at page 3 if the first two are a cover and TOC).
- Choose format: 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 20, i, ii, iii, etc.
- Apply and download.
Can I Skip the First Page?
Yes — many tools let you set an offset so the cover page or table of contents is excluded from numbering while the count starts correctly on the first content page.
Will Page Numbers Overlap Existing Content?
The tool adds numbers in the margin area. If your PDF already has content at the very edge of the page, you may need to add white margins first using a crop/resize tool.
